The Smart Cities Mission is a government initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25, 2015. It aims to develop selected areas within 100 cities across India into model urban spaces through comprehensive area development plans. The mission focuses on improving core infrastructure, providing a clean and sustainable environment, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens using smart solutions. It seeks to drive economic growth and foster sustainable and inclusive development by creating replicable models for other regions. The mission is funded through a combination of central government grants, state and urban local body contributions, and innovative financing mechanisms including public-private partnerships.
Varanasi Smart City Limited (VSCL)” has been formed as per the directives of MoUD, Govt. of India as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under Smart City Mission for implementation of Smart City Projects in Varanasi. In the Smart Cities Mission approach, the aim is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give their citizens a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment and application of ‘Smart’ Solutions. This Special Purpose Vehicle shall carry end to end responsibility for vendor selection, implementation, and operationalization of various smart city projects within the Varanasi city. The Smart City planning has been done with firm belief for the cultural and spiritual importance of the city along with retrofitting of the PAN city area to rejuvenate and re-live in a smarter way through various smart solutions for Varanasi.
Varanasi was selected as a Smart City in round 2 of the Smart Cities Mission on September 27, 2016. This initiative aims to transform cities into sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced urban centers, focusing on improving infrastructure, services, and the overall quality of life for residents.
Varanasi Smart City Ltd has undertaken over 60 projects, including smart schools, parking facilities, parks, riverfront developments, and sports facilities, with a total investment of approximately Rs 930 crore. These initiatives are pivotal in transforming Varanasi into a smarter, more sustainable urban city. Varanasi has consistently ranked among the top 5 smart cities since 2021 and demonstrated impressive performance in the Smart Cities project.
